Interview with National Book Award Nominee, Téa Obreht

I had the pleasure of interviewing the Orange Prize winning wunderkind Téa Obreht for The Rumpus last spring, so I thought I’d link to it in honor of her recent National Book Award nomination for “The Tiger’s Wife.” Congrats Téa!

National Book Award – What a mess…

Terrible news out of the National Book Foundation this morning. Lauren Myracle withdrew her novel “Shine,” which was nominated in the Young People’s Literature category. Why? Because the NBF staff are apparently very bad at “Whisper Down the Lane.”

Publishers Weekly explains:

“Last week, Chime by Franny Billingsley was added as a sixth nominee to the category, and Harold Augenbraum, NBF executive director, confirmed Monday that NBF staff had originally misheard Shine for Chime when the list of nominees was read by the judges over the phone.”

Kudos to Myracle for her grace. Boo on Harold Augenbraum and the NBF.
