In 2005, scientists Erez Aiden and Jean-Baptiste Michel, then Harvard doctoral candidates, found themselves interested in two things that, at first glance, appeared to have very little in common. One was the study of history and human culture, and the other was scopes – you know, microscopes, telescopes, stuff like that. “Wouldn’t it be great, we thought, if we had something like a microscope to measure human culture, to identify and track all those tiny effects that we would never notice otherwise?”
